Common questions
Are the hosts real people?+
No. Alex and Sam are AI. They’re trained to sound like a podcast, not a news reader. They argue, they riff, they push back on each other.
What if Harkwire picks the wrong stories?+
You choose the newsletters. The AI only picks from what you’ve already opted into. If you don’t want finance, don’t add Matt Levine. If the selection ever feels off, you adjust your newsletter list and the next morning’s edition responds.
What does Harkwire cost?+
Harkwire costs $4.99 USD a month for up to five newsletters, $9.99 USD a month for unlimited newsletters, or $39.99 USD a month for Pro, which adds Deep Dive episodes, a watchlist, answers from your archive and on-demand episodes. Every plan starts with a seven-day free trial.
What’s the difference between the plans?+
Starter covers up to five newsletters in a Brief or Morning Update episode. Unlimited covers every newsletter you get, at the same lengths. Pro adds Deep Dive episodes, a watchlist, answers from your archive and on-demand episodes for people who use newsletters for work.
How are the newsletters chosen?+
During onboarding you pick a few interests and we suggest five strong newsletters in those areas. You can add, remove, or swap any of them. From the ones you keep, the daily edition ranks the stories that look most worth your morning: freshness, importance, and whether two outlets are saying the same thing. Starter covers exactly those five; Unlimited lets you add as many as you like.
How are the stories chosen for each episode?+
Each morning the AI reads every newsletter that arrived overnight from your subscribed sources. It ranks stories on three criteria: relevance (does this matter to someone who chose these newsletters?), freshness (is this genuinely from the last 24 hours, not a re-tread of last week’s news?), and importance (a market move outranks a roundup link). When two newsletters cover the same story, it merges them into one segment so you hear both angles without the repetition. From what’s left it picks the three to five stories that fit the episode length you’ve chosen. If the picks feel soft, trim your newsletter list; the next morning’s edition responds.
How long is an episode?+
You choose during onboarding: Brief (1-3 min) for a fast scan, or Morning Update (3-6 min) for the daily ritual. Deep Dive (6-12 min), to properly catch up, is on the Pro plan. Switch anytime from Settings, and the next episode picks up the new length.
Do you read my emails?+
Never. You forward newsletters to a private Harkwire address, or pick from our curated sources directory. We never access your inbox. Your actual email account stays untouched.
Is there an app?+
No. Harkwire is a podcast: you listen in whichever podcast app you already use. After signup we hand you a private feed URL; paste it into Apple Podcasts, Overcast, or Pocket Casts and the episodes show up like any other show.
How do I listen on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, or Pocket Casts?+
After signup, you get a private feed URL. Then:
- Apple Podcasts (iOS): tap Library in the bottom tab bar → … → Follow a Show by URL, then paste it.
- Apple Podcasts (macOS): macOS has no Library tab, so use File → Subscribe to Podcast… and paste the URL.
- Overcast (iOS): tap the magnifying glass in the top right → Add URL.
- Pocket Casts (Android & iOS): paste it into the Discover search bar.
On the “You’re set” page after onboarding, we auto-detect your device and give you a one-tap deep link.
Does it work on Spotify?+
No. Spotify can’t subscribe to private feeds, only public shows. Your Harkwire feed is just for you, so it can’t reach Spotify. Use Apple Podcasts, Overcast, or Pocket Casts; all three work on iOS and Android.
How do I cancel?+
Two clicks, any time, via Stripe’s customer portal. No retention dance, no survey. If Harkwire isn’t working for you, we’d rather you leave clean and come back later.
